The Struggle to Be Strong

Edited by Al Desetta, M.A. & Sybil Wolin, Ph.D.

Description

A compilation of 30 true stories by teens for teens, The Struggle to be Strong: True Stories by Teens about Overcoming Tough Times, is meant to be used in education treatment and prevention settings. It is based on true stories written by teens for teens. The stories are organized in chapters based on the seven specific strengths or resiliencies (insight, independence, relationships, initiative, creativity, humor, and morality) we have identified in people who have successfully struggled against the negative effects of hardship.

The goals of reading the stories with youth are to encourage them to reflect on their own lives, the decisions they make, and their own strengths. A Leader's Guide to The Struggle to be Strong: How to Foster Resilience in Teens  provides active learning experiences that youth will enjoy as well as engaging discussion and writing topics.

Praise for The Struggle to Be Strong: True Stories by Teens About Overcoming Tough Times

"The moving stories in The Struggle to Be Strong and the accompanying Leader's Guide are very important resources for all working to improve the lives of young people. The teens' own words stress the importance of resilience, building on inner strengths, asking tough questions, being one's self, connecting with people who matter, using imagination and humor, and doing the right thing. We adults should act on their valuable insights."

-Marian Wright Edelman
President, Children's Defense Fund
Author of The Measure of Success: A Letter to my Children and Yours

"This slim but mighty volume is a beacon of hope and good sense for young people and their counselors."

-Martin E.P. Seligman, Ph.D.
Author of Learned Optimism and The Optimistic Child

"The Struggle to Be Strong gives voice to youth courageously finding their way. It is an inspiring and provocative work. It comes as a ray of hope at a time when too many youth are pushed out and pushed away."

-Peter L. Benson, Ph.D.
President, Search Institute
Author of What Kids Need to Succeed and All Kids Are Our Kids

"The Struggle to Be Strong is wonderful--and so needed, as my experience is that adults are talking about youth resilience with other adults, but not nearly enough with kids themselves. This book is the best: Kids to kids."

-Nan Henderson, M.S.W.
Author of Resiliency in Schools: Making it Happen For Students and Educators
